1 week Old

Thursday: He started opening his eyes more--when nursing, with low lights, and when held upright.

He tries to hold his head up and look around when held upright.
He doesn't like his skin exposed to cold or wind.

He loves to nurse and suck.

His first night at home we gave him a pacifier to help him sleep.  I hated to give into it so early, but we were desperate.  We've since limited the pacifier to bedtime, the car, and for when we're out of the house and he won't calm down and/or I can't nurse him.

He's overall a pretty calm baby.  He sleeps for long periods of time and then nurses in clusters.  Over the course of the first week he was pretty much awake from 8pm-11to1am.  With each passing day, we were able to get him to sleep sooner, and by the end of the week--after about 4 days--Dave and I were finally able to have a sleep rotation that gave us both the sleep we needed.

He startles very easily--getting burped, sudden noises, etc.

He shakes and shivers when his skin is exposed--especially when getting his diaper changed.

He's not bothered at all by Bunny's constant attention or rough hand.  We're working on teaching her that she has to touch him very gently.

Didn't pee often at all until the beginning of Day 3, at which point he really began soaking his diapers at each feeding.  We've had to do one load of diapers every day since.

Pooped a lot in the hospital.

First night at home--didn't sleep until 12:30.  2nd, not until 1:30.  Friday night he seemed to catch on and sleep earlier and longer.  Also, he went back to sleep when we put him down after diaper changes and feedings.

7/5-7/6--he started actually sleeping at night when swaddled and put in the crib.

It's been hard for me to sleep when the baby sleeps because I'm constantly needed for things.

He has dimples in both cheeks--one cheek even has two of them.

He often grunts and squeaks when sleeping.  He did this a lot in the hospital.

He cluster feeds.  He eats a couple of times in quick succession and then spends a couple of hours sleeping.

He sleeps most of the time.  If you wake him, it's by methods he hates like diaper changes or getting him naked which makes him upset which makes him want to nurse, which makes him fall asleep.

Despite his "lazy latch" my nipples don't hurt very much at all.  I also work hard with him to get a good latch, though he still doesn't open his mouth very wide.

The skin is peeling off his hands and feet.

I have to pat his back a lot more gently than I did with Noelle.

He hated diaper changes ALL THE TIME until July 7 when he was not as upset at every diaper change because he discovered he likes to look out the window.

Check up on Monday-- 9lbs 10oz, 21 inches long.  He gained an ounce and an inch.

He goes through all his AIO diapers in a day plus some fitteds and prefolds so I wash diapers every morning to keep up.  Once his cord falls off we can use some of his OS diapers.

More notes I found after publishing this post:

First night at home, we gave Jim paci to help him sleep. He'll only get it at night when necessary.

Calm baby. Sleeps for long periods of time but is awake from 8-12 or 1am every night so far.

He shivers a lot when exposed to air. He shivers all over!

Mostly calm.

Hard to sleep when the baby's sleeping because I'm constantly needed for things.

He has dimples in both cheeks but in different spots.

He often grunts and squeaks while sleeping. He did this a lot in the hospital and I think it's getting less often the more days of life he has behind him.

1st night at home--didn't sleep til 12:30. 2nd, not til 1:30. Friday night, he seemed to catch on and he slept earlier and longer. Also, he went back to sleep when we put him down after changes and feelings.
